Equality Caucus Praises Senate ENDA Cloture Vote, Calls on House to Take Action

Washington, DC – The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus praised today's bipartisan 61-30 procedural vote in the U.S. Senate in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). ENDA would prohibit discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

In the U.S. House of Representatives a companion to the Senate's Employment Non-Discrimination Act was introduced earlier this year by Representative Jared Polis (D-CO). There are currently 194 bipartisan co-sponsors of ENDA in the House. Earlier on Monday morning Speaker John Boehner's (R-OH) office released a statement opposing ENDA.

The Equality Caucus issued the following statement in response to today's vote:

"We applaud Leader Reid and the bipartisan group of Senators who moved one step closer to passing a fully inclusive ENDA," said Equality Caucus Executive Director Brad Jacklin. "We're confident there is majority support in the House for ENDA and will be working with our partners to bring it up for a vote."

The mission of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus is to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality. The bi-partisan LGBT Equality Caucus is strongly committed to achieving the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBT people in the U.S. and around the world. By serving as a resource for Members of Congress, their staff, and the public on LGBT issues, the Caucus works toward the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and wellbeing for all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
