Equality Caucus Praises Nomination of Mayor Pete Buttigieg to Biden Cabinet

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus praised the selection of Pete Buttigieg to be Secretary of Transportation, noting the historic nature of the selection and thanked President-Elect Joseph R. Biden for paving the way for the first LGBTQ cabinet member. Buttigieg has already made history as the youngest mayor of South Bend, Indiana and the first openly gay candidate to win a primary state. The Caucus sends him its congratulations and looks forward to working with him and his team.

“I’ve known Mayor Buttigieg for years. I’m proud he will be the first openly LGBTQ+ Cabinet official in our country’s history. He has a brilliant intellect, a keen understanding of our infrastructure challenges. He will make an excellent Secretary of Transportation,” said Congressman David Cicilline.

“The selection of Pete Buttigieg to lead the Department of Transportation is a historic choice. Once confirmed by the Senate, Pete will bring an important voice to the table as an out LGBTQ leader, and break barriers as the first LGBTQ cabinet official,” said Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney. “I look forward to working side by side as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on strengthening our transportation systems, improving our infrastructure, and creating jobs as we recover from this pandemic.”

“The nomination of Mayor Pete Buttigieg, an openly gay man, as U.S. Secretary of Transportation is monumental. Never in our history has a member of the LGBTQ+ community served in a Cabinet role – we cannot understate the progress that we have made as a country. Decades of activism, predominantly by Black and brown trans and queer people, have led us to this day, and now we must ensure that we center the needs of those communities in the policymaking process,” said Congressman Mark Takano. “I’m confident that Mayor Buttigieg will fight for equitable policies at the Department of Transportation that will uplift all of our communities and make the necessary investments in our nation’s infrastructure. The Department of Transportation will also play a key role in our fight against climate change and I look forward to seeing how Mayor Buttigieg will help move our country toward a cleaner and healthier future. I applaud President-elect Biden for upholding his commitment to diversity and representation in his cabinet and congratulate Mayor Pete Buttigieg on his nomination.”

“I’m so pleased that Pete Buttigieg will have an important role leading transportation policy in the Biden Administration – and thrilled that President-elect Joe Biden has made LGTBQ representation in his Cabinet a top priority,” said Congresswoman Angie Craig. “I look forward to supporting Secretary Buttigieg and President Biden as they work to enact an ambitious and bipartisan infrastructure package in the 117th Congress.”

“During my time working in the Department of Transportation under then-Secretary Anthony Foxx, I saw the potential that smart and effective investments in infrastructure have to not just grow American manufacturing and create jobs, but to also reach communities that have otherwise been left behind. As a former mayor from the Midwest, Pete Buttigieg brings an important perspective that can help deliver economic opportunity to every person across this country. His nomination is also a historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community. I look forward to working with him in my role on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee,” said Congresswoman Sharice Davids.

“This is a smart and historic pick by President-Elect Joe Biden,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “It could not be more important for Americans to be able to see themselves in their government, and I am pleased that the President-Elect is continuing to build an administration that looks like America. Pete Buttigieg is a tireless public servant who will bring fresh ideas and a renewed spirit of bipartisanship to this critical agency. Our country faces tremendous challenges in the coming years. By making robust investments in infrastructure we can put Americans back to work and create the framework for success for individuals, businesses, and communities. I look forward to working with Pete Buttigieg to build a brighter future and move our country forward.”
