Equality Caucus Condemns
Washington, D.C. – Discrimination is wrong. Transgender Americans deserve the opportunity to live their lives with the same dignity and respect as everyone else.
This bill, however, would enshrine into federal law - for the first time in our history - discrimination based on gender identity. It is being introduced by a Representative who is leaving Congress in less than three weeks for the sole purpose of demonizing transgender people who are already at increased risk of suffering violence, discrimination, mental illness, and self-harm. It addresses no legitimate policy concerns. It is inconsistent with our country’s founding values of equal treatment and non-discrimination.
The Equality Act, which passed the House last year with the support of every Democrat and eight Republicans, protects against this exact kind of anti-trans discrimination. It is critical that Congress pass the Equality Act into law next year so we can finally prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
